PDF remediation policy and status
The festival preserves historic PDFs as source artefacts. Automated conversion alone cannot honestly certify a complex literary PDF as WCAG 2.2 AA or PDF/UA conformant. Tagged reading order, headings, lists, table structure, language, alt text and assistive-technology behaviour require verification.
What is implemented
- Every one of the 486 preserved archive files has a first-party accessible HTML metadata/navigation record.
- A machine-readable remediation register identifies tagging and full-text status explicitly.
- Legacy PDFs are never labelled accessible merely because they contain selectable text.
- The accessible archive index exposes both the HTML record and preserved source.
What “verified tagged PDF” means
The register changes to verified only after semantic tagging and manual checks of reading order, document language, headings, links, tables/images where present, zoom/reflow behaviour where applicable, and assistive-technology reading.
