- 0:24–0:32No one has ever left this hermitage with a wish unfulfilled, stranger. I promise that all your
- 0:32–0:38wishes shall be fulfilled. But when knowledge is given, the giver must also consider the worthiness
- 0:38–0:46of the receiver. I am Indra, King of the Gods. I have come to receive from you instruction in
- 0:46–0:56the supreme reality. Through this, your fame will reach the heavenly realm. I have promised
- 0:56–1:00to teach him, but is Indra worthy of this knowledge?
- 1:00–1:05A man who roams with a thunderbolt and is immersed in sensual desire, should such an unworthy
- 1:05–1:09person receive instruction in the supreme reality?
- 1:09–1:14If knowledge falls into arrogant hands, honey can turn to poison.
- 1:14–1:21Yet I have given my word, so, to uphold my vow, I shall teach Indra the modificio.
- 1:21–1:24What has plunged you into such deep thought, Maharshi?
- 1:24–1:31Indra, I shall teach you the modu-vidya. Keep away from indulgence, from every kind of pleasure
- 1:31–1:38and rich food. Such things are like a snake hidden among flowers. If indulgence rules
- 1:38–1:44him, what difference remains between Indra, Lord of heaven, and the lowest dog on earth?
- 1:44–1:49The modu-vidya teaches that all beings are honey for one another, whoever lives only for
- 1:49–1:51himself turns honey into poison.
- 1:51–1:59Maharshi, today I have endured this insult from you.
- 1:59–2:04But from this day onward, if you give the Madhavidya to anyone else, this head, whose intellect
- 2:04–2:09fills you with such pride, will fall from your neck onto this ground.
- 2:09–2:11I shall stand guard over knowledge.
- 2:11–2:24Maharshi, we have now become fully worthy to receive your Madhavidya.
- 2:24–2:27We have abandoned the paths of violence and indulgence.
- 2:27–2:31At the Soma sacrifice Indra judged us entirely unworthy to drink Soma.
- 2:31–2:34Yet we did not seek revenge.
- 2:34–2:38We gave legs to many who were lame and sight to many who were blind.
- 2:38–2:41We drove away the old age of sage Chayavana.
- 2:41–2:46In gratitude for that service Chayavana made us eligible to partake of Soma.
- 2:46–2:51Service made us worthy ranked did not.
- 2:51–2:56Ashvins to impart knowledge of Brahmin is an act of benevolence and you are entirely
- 2:56–3:01worthy students of this knowledge. Indra has declared that on the very day I ever give this
- 3:01–3:08knowledge to anyone, he will sever my head from my body. But this body is transient. If
- 3:08–3:16not today, it must perish tomorrow. Fear of that cannot make me allow Brahma Vidya to disappear.
- 3:16–3:20No one commits a greater crime than one who obstructs knowledge.
- 3:20–3:23Maharshi, what greatness of spirit.
- 3:23–3:30of spirit but we too know surgery first we shall attach a horse's head to your neck when Indra
- 3:30–3:35carries out his vial act and cuts off your head we shall restore your true head to your body
- 3:35–3:45you preserve the knowledge we shall find a way to preserve your life every substance in this
- 3:45–3:51world serves every other this earth is honey for all beings and all beings are honey for the earth
- 3:51–3:58Earth. All life is of the nature of honey, radiant and immortal. Upon the foundation
- 3:58–4:04of truth, the sun spreads light through the world. The moon's white radiance drives away
- 4:04–4:09the heaviness of night and brings coolness. When knowledge dawns, the snake imagined in
- 4:09–4:15darkness is seen to be a rope. Grasp with your understanding the unifying thread of
- 4:15–4:22universe, the supreme self. Just as the spokes of a chariot will rest in its hub, the entire
- 4:22–4:28universe rests in the supreme self. Whoever sees this will regard no one as inferior and
- 4:28–4:38will make no one merely a means to an end.
- 4:38–4:45Forgive my offense, Maharshi. Today the Ashvan brothers have shown me a new path. One who
- 4:45–4:50learns even a single letter from a teacher honors that teacher, but what have I done?
- 4:51–4:57The true disciples are the Ashwin brothers. In the name of protecting knowledge, I had set out
- 4:57–5:05to destroy knowledge itself. Indra, that is why I had been reluctant to teach you. Yet because
- 5:05–5:12of your determination and your devotion to truth, I taught you. I hold no bitterness toward you.
- 5:12–5:17The offense has been seen, and repentance has been seen as well.
- 5:17–5:21Now make knowledge an act of service, not a source of authority.
- 5:21–5:28Bless are you, and bless are the Ashvins. I am no longer the Indra I was.
- 5:28–5:47The Ashvins have ended my arrogance. The attack by Vritra and Shambhara is exceptionally fierce
- 5:47–5:52this time. I have come not with arrogance, but to seek your guidance, Maharshi.
- 5:52–5:59Indra, near Kurakshetra there is a reservoir called Sharyana.
- 5:59–6:01Go there.
- 6:01–6:05The horse's head through which I instructed the Ashvins has been kept there.
- 6:05–6:10Brahma Vidyapas threw that mouth, and because of it the head has become exceptionally hard
- 6:10–6:12and strong.
- 6:12–6:16From it, fashioned weapons of many kinds.
- 6:16–6:22Use fire-based destructive devices, the Trisandev Raja, bows, arrows, iron-headed shafts with
- 6:22–6:27needle-like points and hard vicanquity-shaped heads.
- 6:27–6:29Use armour and helmets.
- 6:29–6:34Also use weapons that spread darkness and weapons that release foul-smelling smoke
- 6:34–6:36through burning cords.
- 6:36–6:39Fight and be victorious.
- 6:39–6:44But remember, the dharma of a weapon is defence, not vanity.
- 6:44–6:55As you command, Maharshi.
- 6:55–6:59Indra was victorious, and the wicked fled into caves.
- 6:59–7:02This was the Vedic drama.
- 7:02–7:04Dadhachi did not give away his body.
- 7:04–7:08What he gave was the defence of knowledge, his vow, and truth.
- 7:08–7:14Later, the storytellers of the Puranas distorted this meaning and told instead that Indra's
- 7:14–7:17thunderbolt was made from Dadhachi's bones.
- 7:17–7:22Children, listen, a story may change, but the search for truth must never cease.
