Problem
Chapter 78 focused on the hard problem of the phenomenal character of consciousness. But conscious experience is not merely
the fact that “there is something it is like”; most experiences, beliefs, desires, memories, fears, imaginings and decisions are
about some object, event, person, possibility or state of affairs. This quality of being directed towards “something” is called
intentionality.
The ordinary meaning of the word intentionality is not “intention” or voluntary intention. In its philosophical technical sense, it
concerns aboutness, directedness, representation or content. We believe that rain will come, remember our village, imagine an
impossible city, desire justice—all these mental states have some content, whose object may be real, absent or imaginary.
Franz Brentano reintroduced intentionality into modern debate as a distinctive mark of mental phenomena. But Brentano’s
formula alone does not answer two further questions: “Are all instances of mental phenomena intentional?” and “How does a
physical or computational system acquire intentional content?”
The first difficulty for intentionality is inexistence or nonexistence. We can think about a unicorn, imagine a war that never
occurred in history, or fear a future possibility. If the two relata of a relation must both genuinely exist, how can mental
directedness towards a nonexistent object be possible?
The second difficulty is misrepresentation. A belief may be false; perception may be illusory; a map may be outdated; an AI
output may be fabricated. A representation can be about something that is not as represented. A theory of aboutness must
therefore explain not only truth but the possibility of error.
The third difficulty concerns the relation between intentionality and consciousness. Some intentional states are conscious, but
many beliefs or dispositions remain unconscious. Conversely, it is disputed how clear the intentional object of pain or a mood is.
Thus neither of the simple equations “intentional = conscious” and “conscious = intentional” is secure.
The second axis of this chapter is the self. “Whose experience is it?” “What does it mean for a thought to be one’s own?” “Am I the
same person today as I was yesterday?” “Are agency and ownership the same thing?” “Is the self an object, a process, a narrative,
a model, or an illusion of a permanent entity?” These questions are connected with the first-person structure of intentionality.
The word self is itself polysemous. It may mean a minimal experiential self, bodily self, agent, narrative identity, social identity,
moral person, persisting organism or metaphysical subject. Collapsing all these senses into one word makes the debate obscure.
One serious issue connecting intentionality and the self is de se thought—a thought in which a person thinks of themself as “I”.
“Gajendra Thakur is hungry” and “I am hungry” may refer to the same person, but they do not play the same role in practical
reasoning. A first-person mode of presentation can itself make a difference to action.
For this reason, the aim of Chapter 79 is not to choose one “theory of the self” and end the matter. Its aim is to distinguish the
separate questions of intentional content, first-person perspective, ownership, agency, persistence and narrative; to identify
their arguments, evidence and limits; and to enable dialogue with Indian and Mithila-related materials through the parallel
method.
Core Proposition
The chapter’s central proposition is that it is useful to view intentionality not as a single relation but as a family of forms of
content-bearing directedness. Perception, belief, desire, memory, imagination, emotion and action-intention share the structural
problem of object-directedness, but their satisfaction conditions and evidential roles differ.
Perception is ordinarily world-guided and action-linked; belief is truth-apt; desire is satisfaction-apt; intention guides action;
memory is past-directed; imagination constructs a scenario without taking its object to be present. A theory that calls all of these
simply “representation” without distinction loses explanatory detail.
Husserlian phenomenology emphasises the fine structure of intentional act and intentional content. Consciousness generally
presents something “as something”: the same object may appear differently from different perspectives, expectations, memories
and horizons. Content is therefore not merely raw stimulus but structured presentation.
Analytic philosophy has emphasised the semantics, reference, truth conditions, causal role and naturalisation of intentional
content. Searle distinguishes intrinsic intentionality from the derived intentionality of language; Dennett proposes the
intentional stance as an explanatory strategy; Dretske, Fodor and Millikan attempt to explain content through natural causal-
information relations or biological function.
A challenge for naturalising intentionality is its normative dimension. How can a representation be “correct” or “incorrect”?
Causal correlation alone does not yield truth. Smoke is an indicator of fire, but it is not thereby a belief about fire.
Teleosemantics attempts to explain normativity through function, producer–consumer relations and the possibility of
malfunction.
The central proposition concerning the self is that several levels of self-experience must be distinguished. Using Shaun
Gallagher’s terminology, the minimal self is close to momentary first-person givenness and experiences of agency and
ownership; the narrative self is tied to time, memory, values, social recognition and autobiographical story.
The minimal self need not be regarded as a permanent metaphysical substance. Experience may appear first-personally as
“mine” even while long-term narrative identity changes. Dan Zahavi argues that such pre-reflective self-awareness is an intrinsic
dimension of conscious experience.
Agency and ownership are distinct: “This hand is mine” concerns ownership; “I produced this movement” concerns agency.
Neurological and psychiatric anomalies, involuntary movement and reports of thought insertion, among other phenomena,
show the conceptual usefulness of this distinction. But before turning clinical phenomena into philosophical slogans, empirical
heterogeneity must be acknowledged.
The question of persistence is different again: under what conditions is a person at time t1 the same person at t2? Psychological
continuity, bodily or animal continuity, memory, causal connectedness, narrative integration and brute identity offer competing
answers. The presence of self-experience is not a sufficient criterion of persistence.
The chapter’s combined formula is: “The question of aboutness is a question of content; the question of first-personness is a
question of presentation; the question of identity is a question of persistence; the question of agency is a question of authorship;
the question of ownership is a question of mineness. Collapsing these five into one produces philosophical confusion.”
Principal Arguments
According to Brentano’s famous proposal, mental phenomena are distinguished by intentional object-directedness. Historically
influential though this thesis is, it remains contested as a universal marker. Diffuse anxiety, undirected pain or a bare mood may
lack a clear intentional object; in the other direction, linguistic symbols, maps and computer states may also possess derived
representational content.
The problem of the intentional object challenges the ordinary metaphysics of the word “relation”. If Ram imagines a unicorn, the
unicorn does not exist, yet the imagining is meaningful. One response treats content, proposition or intentional mode as
mediating the relation: the mind need not stand in an external relation to a necessarily real object, but is world-directed through
content.
A problem analogous to the Fregean mode of presentation also appears in the mind. A person may take Venus to be “the evening
star” while not knowing that “the morning star” is identical with that object. Extensional reference may be the same while
cognitive significance differs. A theory of intentional content must accommodate this intensionality.

The distinction between de re and de dicto thought has practical importance. “Some doctor wants to save me” may have an
existential or role-based reading; “I will thank that doctor” is directed towards a specific person. Distinctions in the syntax and
semantics of mental content matter in action, responsibility, testimony and AI reasoning.
According to John Searle’s network/background framework, intentional states are not isolated: beliefs and desires are
meaningful against a background of other beliefs, capacities, practices and nonrepresentational know-how. The strength of this
view is its holism, but a limitation is that the boundary of the background can itself become unclear.
Dennett’s intentional stance treats a system as a belief–desire agent in order to predict its behaviour. Saying that a chess
program “wants to save its queen” may be useful predictive shorthand. This establishes instrumental usefulness; it does not
necessarily establish intrinsic phenomenology or literal belief.
The attraction of causal and informational theories is that they connect content to physical relations. If a neural state reliably
causally covaries with a feature of the world, this may provide a basis for representation. But the disjunction problem arises:
does a frog’s detector represent “fly” or “small dark moving thing”? Mistaken triggering makes content determination difficult.
Fodor’s asymmetric-dependence proposal attempts to explain error cases by making the causal dependence of erroneous tokens
asymmetric upon the conditions for correct tokens. This is a sophisticated proposal, but the diversity of biological learning,
context and concept acquisition is difficult to compress into a single causal law.
Millikan’s teleosemantics explains representation through proper function, producer–consumer coordination and the possibility
of malfunction. Biological history is invoked to supply normativity: a signal can fulfil or fail its function. The challenge is
extending this account to cultural and novel concepts, abstract mathematics and rapidly learned representations.
Functional-role semantics understands content through a state’s place in an inferential and causal network. A belief that rain
will come has causal and inferential relations to perception, taking an umbrella, other beliefs and linguistic reports. The
limitation is that the role may become so holistic that interpersonal comparison of content becomes difficult.
Embodied and enactive approaches challenge the monopoly of internal representation. Perception arises through organism–
environment coupling, sensorimotor skill and readiness for action. On this view, intentionality is not merely brain-internal
symbol manipulation. Radical anti-representationalism, however, faces pressure in explaining planning, counterfactual
reasoning and thought about absent objects.
Emotion is a special case of intentionality. Fear may be directed towards some danger, shame towards social evaluation, and
grief towards a lost relationship. Emotional content may be a combined structure of bodily feeling, appraisal, memory, norm and
social context; its object need not be a proposition alone.
Turning now to the self, the problem of the indexical “I” is made vivid by John Perry’s essential indexical. In a grocery store, the
person following a trail of sugar changes from third-person factual knowledge to first-person action-guiding knowledge when
they realise, “This trail is coming from my bag.” De se content has a distinctive role in practical agency.
Shoemaker’s distinction concerning immunity to error through misidentification shows that, in some circumstances, first-person
judgements such as “I am in pain” do not fail through the ordinary route of misidentifying which person is affected. Yet self-
knowledge is not infallible: self-ascriptions of belief, motive, emotion and memory can be wrong.
The argument for the minimal self is phenomenological: conscious experience is normally given first-personally. The object of
perception may be a table, yet the experience is simultaneously lived as “it appears this way to me”. On a Zahavi-style thesis,
such givenness does not require explicit inner observation or a second representation.
Higher-order approaches argue in the opposite direction: a conscious state is conscious when the subject represents it by means
of a higher-order thought or perception. This seeks to naturalise self-awareness in a reflexive architecture. Challenges include
regress, unconscious higher-order representation, and fit with phenomenological immediacy.
Gallagher’s distinction between agency and ownership enters fruitful dialogue with motor-control research. Comparator and
efference-copy models explain some aspects of action authorship, but high-level decision, thought agency, social authorship and
moral responsibility cannot be reduced to motor prediction error alone.
Narrative theories of the self hold that a person constructs temporal unity through the story of a life, commitments, roles and
interpretations. Approaches associated with Schechtman and Ricoeur show the ethical and social value of narrative integration.
Galen Strawson, however, warns that not every healthy person has a strong narrative orientation; narrativity should not become
a universal norm.
Parfit-style reductionism challenges the metaphysical “deep further fact” of persistence. Psychological continuity and
connectedness may be sufficient for practical concern even where strict identity becomes problematic in branching cases. Moral
concern may therefore rest on graded relations rather than a binary of identity.
Animalism says that we are fundamentally human animals and that biological continuity grounds personal persistence. This
view challenges intuitions about brain uploading or teleportation. Psychological theories centre memory and personality;
animalism centres the organism’s life-process. Both have intuitive costs.
According to Metzinger’s self-model theory, the phenomenal self is a transparent representational model: the system does not
experience the model as a model but as “the world/self itself”. The conclusion that “no selves exist” is provocative; a criticism is
that the nonexistence of a modelled entity does not by itself eliminate the practical or normative reality of subjectivity.
The social dimension of the self is also important. Name, caste, gender, profession, citizenship, language, family role and
institutional records shape a person’s identity. But social identity is not the same as minimal subjectivity; social categorisation
shapes the first-person stance rather than replacing it.
Intentionality and the self finally meet in the de se mode. “The world is thus” and “I am at this place in this world” have different
informational roles. Self-locating content can be decisive in navigation, action, promise, guilt, responsibility, planning and
memory.
Pūrvapakṣa
Pūrvapakṣa 1: There is no need to make intentionality into a metaphysical mystery; mature neuroscience will explain it
completely through causal coding. “Aboutness” is merely a folk description. Brain states map stimuli to actions; a separate
ontology of content is unnecessary.
Pūrvapakṣa 2: On the contrary, causal coding cannot explain intentionality because normativity—the correctness or
incorrectness of representation—does not follow from physical causation. Intentionality is therefore irreducibly semantic or a
conscious property.
Pūrvapakṣa 3: Phenomenology is over-intellectualised. Finding a “pre-reflective self” in conscious experience may be a
philosopher’s projection. Neuroscience constructs a self-model; “mineness” is merely a brain-generated illusion.
Pūrvapakṣa 4: The self exists as a substance; an enduring subject is necessary even though memory, body and narrative change.
Otherwise moral responsibility, promise, ownership and survival become unintelligible.
Pūrvapakṣa 5: The opposite thesis—the self is wholly an illusion. Taking momentary processes, memories and predictive models
to have “one owner” is a cognitive error. Ethics and law can be reconstructed in process-based terms without a concept of self.
Pūrvapakṣa 6: Narrative identity is not necessarily emancipatory; social power imposes narratives upon persons. Family, caste,
nation, gender and profession tell a person “who you are”, and narrative theories of self may legitimate oppressive scripting.
Pūrvapakṣa 7: First-person authority is unreliable. Confabulation, implicit bias, memory distortion and self-deception show that
the claim “I know my own mind in a special way” is exaggerated.
Pūrvapakṣa 8: De se content is not a distinct semantic category. “I” can be replaced by a proper name or description to express
every proposition; the essential indexical is merely a pragmatic convenience.

Pūrvapakṣa 9: Intentional language applied to AI systems is anthropomorphic. An LLM’s “belief”, “goal” and “self-model” are all
metaphors; there is no intrinsic meaning within symbol manipulation.
Pūrvapakṣa 10: Conversely, substrate chauvinism is mistaken. If an artificial system has the same functional and causal
organisation, learning, self-monitoring and world-guided behaviour, there is no valid reason to privilege biology by denying it
intentionality or selfhood.
Pūrvapakṣa 11: Indian debates over self and no-self are historically unrelated to modern philosophy of mind; comparison will
amount to presentism.
Pūrvapakṣa 12: It is equally mistaken to claim that Mithila’s Navya-Nyāya categories solved the modern problem of
intentionality. Similarity of technical vocabulary does not establish genealogical identity or theoretical equivalence.
Uttarapakṣa
The first principle of the Uttarapakṣa is explanatory pluralism. Neural causation, computational function, phenomenological
structure, semantic normativity, social practice and evolutionary history may be distinct explanatory levels of intentionality.
Success at one level does not make another meaningless.
A causal explanation may explain the vehicle of content; a semantic explanation its truth/error relation; phenomenology its
mode of presentation; a social explanation the acquisition of concepts. The demand for “one complete reduction” is itself a
methodological choice, not an empirical result.
The project of naturalising intentionality is legitimate, but its success criterion must be clear: representation, misrepresentation,
compositionality, novel content and normative correctness must be explained using nonintentional resources. Merely saying
“the brain correlates with X” is not a theory of content.
The strength of teleosemantics is that it gives malfunction and normativity a natural basis. But acquired cultural content will
require connection with learning history, social convention and inferential role. A hybrid account may be more plausible than
pure biological function.
The strength of phenomenological intentionality is that perception is lived “as meaningful”; a model of raw sensation plus later
judgement may be incomplete. But phenomenology is not a synonym for introspective certainty: reports must remain publicly
contestable, comparable across subjects and constrained by empirical evidence.
On the self, the reply is to ask first what “self” means before posing the binary question “does the self exist or not?” If self means
an unchanging immaterial substance, the evidence is one kind; if it means minimal first-person organisation, another; if it
means narrative-social identity, the criteria are different. Semantic disambiguation can reduce part of an apparent metaphysical
conflict.
The minimal self may be understood not as an entity but as a structural property: experience is organised first-personally. This
thesis does not imply a permanent soul. A Buddhism-inspired no-self critique and a phenomenological minimal-self account
therefore need not be logically contradictory; they may target different senses of “self”.
The agency/ownership distinction refines responsibility. An action may be of my body yet involuntary; a thought may occur in
my mind yet not be endorsed. In law and ethics it is appropriate to examine authorship, control, foresight, identification and
ownership separately.
First-person authority should be understood as defeasible privilege. An immediate avowal of pain or experience may have a
special epistemic standing compared with an external observer, while the subject may still be wrong about motive, character,
memory, diagnosis and causal explanation. Privilege is not infallibility.
The answer to the essential indexical appears in practical reasoning: without self-locating information, an agent may be unable
to select an action. “Someone is in danger” and “I am in danger” are informationally related but differ in action-guidance. The
irreducibility of de se content is not removed by purely linguistic substitution.
The narrative self is useful, but its degree is optional. A person can organise a biography without producing a continuously
coherent story. Narrative continuity should be an ethical resource, not a compulsory test of authenticity. Fragmentation, silence,
trauma, migration and multilingual life can disrupt the expectation of a linear story.
An answer to personal identity should not rest on a single intuition. Dementia, amnesia, split-brain cases, fission thought
experiments, organismic continuity, legal identity and social recognition reveal different desiderata. A philosophical theory
should be tested by consistency plus explanatory coverage, not cinematic intuition.
A graded attribution may be appropriate for AI intentionality: design-intentionality, derived semantic content, system-level
functional goal, learned world-model, self-model and phenomenal intentionality are distinct. Before saying “AI understands”,
specify which sense is being used.
An artificial self likewise requires layered assessment. A persistent user ID or memory store may resemble narrative continuity
without being self-awareness. A self-referential token “I” is not evidence of de se awareness. Agency would require evidence of
autonomous goal formation, counterfactual control, self-monitoring, normative revision and an architecture of responsibility.
Indian comparison becomes fruitful only when the local role of concepts is preserved. Nyāya’s self, cognition and anuvyavasāya;
Buddhist no-self and reflexive awareness; and the Advaita witness should be read not as synonyms of the modern minimal self
or intentionality but as distinct argumentative systems.
The formula of the Uttarapakṣa is: “First clarify the target; then compare the evidence; finally seek explanatory dialogue, not
equivalence.”
Indian Dialogue
Indian philosophical traditions contain extensive debates about cognition, subject, object, self-awareness and error. But Chapter
79 is not intended to replace Chapter 80’s debate over ātman, anātman and citta; here only a limited dialogue is undertaken with
the specific contemporary questions of intentionality and self.
In the Nyāya tradition, cognition—jñāna or buddhi—is regarded as a quality of the self, and cognition is generally object-related.
The self is accepted as the substrate of cognition, but Nyāya does not necessarily accept cognition as self-luminous. Subsequent
awareness, anuvyavasāya, raises the problem of a model of reflexive knowledge.
Anuvyavasāya is not a “precursor” of modern higher-order theory. The functional analogy is that a second cognition of a
cognition is possible; the historical concepts, metaphysics and epistemic aims differ. The benefit of comparison is that it can
sharpen, across traditions, the dispute over whether self-awareness is always an intrinsic feature of the same act or requires a
higher-order apprehension.
Navya-Nyāya analysis of relations offers methodological inspiration for precision about intentional content. Distinctions among
qualifier, qualificand, relation, locus, absence and delimitor can reduce confusion. But “Navya-Nyāya = modern semantics” is
false; formal aims, textual history and ontology differ.
Buddhist Abhidharma, Madhyamaka and Yogācāra lineages offer different no-self analyses. Rejecting a permanent independent
owner or agent does not automatically reject first-person phenomenology. There are internal differences concerning
momentariness, dependent origination, reflexive awareness where it is accepted, store-consciousness, and other issues.
Buddhist no-self can enter an interesting dialogue with modern Metzinger-style self-model theory, but the two are not
equivalent. The Buddhist project belongs to a soteriological, ethical, phenomenological and metaphysical context; Metzinger’s
belongs to a cognitive-neuroscientific representational framework. A similar anti-substance conclusion is not the same theory.

Advaita Vedānta’s language of witness consciousness, sākṣin, offers a serious alternative ontology of first-person subjectivity. But
it is inappropriate to call the phenomenological minimal self a secularised version of sākṣin. Advaita’s metaphysical
commitments—identity of ātman and Brahman, ignorance and liberation—carry a distinct argumentative burden.
Mīmāṃsā, Nyāya, Buddhist and Vedānta debates offer rich disagreement over whether knowledge is self-revealing or known
through subsequent cognition. Contemporary theories of self-consciousness can learn conceptual possibilities from this
disagreement without making a claim of priority.
Jonardon Ganeri’s modern analysis of the first-person stance draws on classical Indian resources and distinguishes dimensions
such as self-presentation, ownership, embodiment and normative avowal. This cross-traditional methodology is close to Chapter
79’s “parallel” ideal: respect for historical concepts plus contemporary re-articulation.
A caution for Indian dialogue: “ātman” does not everywhere equal “self”; “citta” does not everywhere equal “mind”; “vijñāna”
does not map in one line onto “consciousness”; “ahaṃkāra” is not simply “ego” in the modern psychological sense. Translation
itself is a philosophical hypothesis, not a dictionary equivalence.
Caste, gender, religion, language, family and bodily location shape first-person identity. The question of the abstract self in
classical metaphysics does not fully answer the modern question of the social self. Parallel Philosophy will hold both levels—
phenomenal subjectivity and institutional identity—together while keeping them distinct.
Indian maxim: “Before making a traditional concept answer a modern question, understand its original problem, method of
argument and aim.”
Mithila’s Parallel Perspective
Mithila is not presented in this chapter as the “birthplace of a theory of the self”. Its importance is methodological and archival:
the Nyāya and Navya-Nyāya traditions, traditions of logical debate, manuscripts, commentaries, social records, Maithili linguistic
practice and the India–Nepal borderland experience provide opportunities for dialogue among different data-types concerning
intentionality and self.
Gaṅgeśa Upādhyāya and the later Navya-Nyāya tradition teach a rigorous discipline of relation-sensitive language for analysing
cognition and content. But similarity should not be turned into a claim of direct historical influence upon the Brentano–Husserl–
Searle genealogy of modern intentionality without evidence.
Maithili first-person expressions—“ham”, “hamar”, “hamrā”, together with honorific and relational forms—provide linguistic
data concerning de se reference, social deixis and relational identity. Linguistic patterns do not establish a metaphysical self;
they can, however, become material for corpus research on how language encodes first-person perspective.
Folk songs, marriage songs, migrant letters, autobiographies, oral histories, women’s songs, labour narratives and cross-border
family narratives display diverse forms of narrative selfhood. When constructing an archive, do not homogenise the performer’s
voice into a “collective Mithila self”; annotate caste, gender, class, generation and location.
Migration is a striking case of self-location. A person living in Delhi, the Gulf, Kathmandu or elsewhere may say, “I am from
Mithila”; territorial presence, language, kinship, memory, legal citizenship and emotional belonging then become distinct
dimensions. Narrative identity can be multilocal.
The India–Nepal Mithila cross-border context shows the limit of the inference “same culture = same political identity”.
Citizenship, state law, education, passport and property rights may differ while linguistic and kinship belonging overlap. The
social layer of self is polycentric.
Pañjī, genealogies or administrative records are institutional representations of personal identity. They are not the “self” but
external models of identity. Records may be wrong, incomplete, exclusionary or strategic. Digitising genealogy raises ethical
questions of consent, caste privacy, women’s missing records, and nonbinary or atypical family structures.
Flood and displacement can rupture narrative continuity: home, documents, memory-objects, farmland and neighbourhood may
be lost. In rehabilitation policy, identity is not merely an Aadhaar-like identifier; place attachment, livelihood role, language and
social networks are also practical conditions of personhood.
In a Maithili digital corpus, pronoun resolution, speaker identity, reported speech, honorifics and ellipsis can become local
challenges for AI research on intentionality. A model may generate text saying “I”; this is a token-level first-person form, not
evidence of a phenomenal self.
In digitising Mithila manuscripts, the question of authorial intention is difficult because of scribal variants, layers of
commentary, interpolation and damaged folios. Reconstructing “what the author actually meant to say” is a question of textual
evidence; fear of the intentional fallacy does not require abandoning historical intention altogether.
When reconstructing intentional content from folk memory and philosophical texts, keep provenance separate—original text,
commentary, oral interpretation, editor’s inference and AI-generated gloss. Otherwise derived intentionality will be imposed
upon the original author.
Mithila’s parallel maxim is: “Records of identity and self-experience are not the same; language says ‘I’, but the meaning of ‘I’ is
formed in history, body, relation and context.”
Contemporary Applications
A philosophical audit of an LLM’s output “I think” should distinguish four levels: linguistic first-person marker, system self-
reference, persistent internal self-model, and phenomenal mineness. Presence of the first does not establish the fourth.
Attributing belief to an AI agent may be a useful engineering fiction: “the agent believes the door is closed” can be shorthand for
state estimation. A claim of literal belief requires evidence of content grounding, counterfactual robustness, autonomous
correction, world-directed sensitivity to error, and relevant architecture.
Robotics provides a strong case for sensorimotor intentionality: a camera–actuator loop responds to features of the world. Yet
representational content may be a joint result of environmental design, training objectives, learned models and user
interpretation; a claim of a single intrinsic meaning requires caution.
An autonomous vehicle incorrectly classifying a pedestrian is a concrete case of misrepresentation. The error is not merely an
output mismatch: safety-critical content attribution, confidence calibration, sensor failure, training bias and the chain of
responsibility matter.
A recommender system infers what a user “wants”. Click does not equal desire; dwell time does not equal endorsement. Treating
a behavioural proxy’s derived intentionality as the user’s actual preference and making policy on that basis is an epistemic
error.
A digital twin or personal AI represents “your self”; it is not you. Email history, voice clone, preferences, calendar and writing
style form a narrative or behavioural model; ownership, continuity, consent and posthumous use of data are separate ethical
questions.
Memory prostheses, life-logging and AI-generated autobiographical summaries can shape the narrative self. An automatically
generated chronology can reinsert factual errors into personal memory; provenance, editable records and uncertainty labels are
therefore necessary.
In dementia care, do not reduce personhood to the current memory score. Even where psychological continuity is weakened,
bodily continuity, affective relationships, habits, values, recognition, advance wishes and social bonds retain moral relevance.
Clinical reports of thought insertion or disruption of agency can provide conceptual evidence for philosophy, but this chapter is
not sufficient for diagnosis or treatment. Philosophical use requires nuance in lived reports, engagement with clinical literature
and person-first dignity.

Before calling a neural pattern decoded by a brain–computer interface “the user’s thought”, validate the content. Classifier
signal, intended command, subvocal pattern, conscious endorsement and private thought are different. False-positive attribution
of agency or intention can cause legal harm.
In discussion of neurorights, mental privacy is connected with an informational boundary of the self. Brain data are not the self,
but they can be an extremely intimate proxy. Consent should be granular, revocable and purpose-specific.
Virtual-reality rubber-hand and body-ownership illusions show the plasticity of the embodied self. A shift in ownership does not
establish metaphysical body-switching; it is an experimental phenomenon of multisensory integration.
In avatar-mediated interaction, changing appearance can affect the experience of narrative and social selfhood. Platform
identity verification should not be made the sole measure of the “real self”; the legitimacy of pseudonymity, safety and multiple
roles should be considered.
A deepfake voice can present an intentional utterance as if produced by a person while speaker intention is absent. Legal and
ethical audit must distinguish content, source, authorisation, provenance of synthesis and deception of the audience.
In contract and consent, a signature or button-click is a derived intentional signal, not complete proof of genuinely informed
intention. Interface coercion, dark patterns, language comprehension, capacity and opportunities for revocation must be
examined.
In criminal responsibility, mental-state terms such as intention, knowledge and recklessness are related to philosophical
intentionality, but legal definitions are distinct. A neuroscientific finding does not map directly onto legal mens rea.
In education, reflection on self-models can be useful: a student may revise the narrative identity “I am bad at mathematics” on
the basis of evidence rather than treating it as a permanent essence. But motivational intervention should not shift responsibility
for structural inequality onto the individual.
A social-media profile is a curated narrative self. Algorithmically resurfaced “memories” can construct continuity, but they raise
questions about the right to forget, context collapse, changes in adolescent identity and privacy.
An AI companion with persistent memory can acquire a place in a user’s relational self. Product design should be transparent
about simulated care, generated recollection, commercial incentives and actual interpersonal reciprocity as distinct things.
Identity claims made by a chatbot modelled on a dead person require special caution. Archive-based imitation of style is not the
survival of the deceased person. Consent, family conflict, posthumous privacy, exploitation of grief and disclosure policy must be
addressed.
Identity documents provide administrative continuity; they do not settle the ontology of the biological, psychological or narrative
self. In procedures for changing name, gender or address, a state record can exercise disproportionate power over a person’s
lived identity.
In multilingual AI translation, incorrect rendering of “I”, honorifics, kinship terms or gender markers can alter the speaker’s
identity. Translation evaluation should not rely only on a BLEU-like score; de se reference and social deixis must be preserved.
When AI infers authorial intention in historical archive search, its confidence should be stated. Uncertainty arising from missing
documents, scribal mediation and editorial normalisation should not be hidden.
On reading a headline such as “AI developed a self”, first ask: what is the operational measure? Self-recognition? Persistent
memory? Metacognition? A self-model? Agency? Phenomenal subjectivity? Clarifying the category prevents sensational
inference.
Contemporary maxim: “A system’s saying ‘I’ is not evidence of a self; goal-like behaviour is not evidence of intrinsic intention;
but neither of these points makes functional intentionality useless.”
Chapter Conclusion
Intentionality is a meeting point between philosophy of mind and philosophy of language. It asks how a mental state can be
about something, how content can be true or false, how directedness towards an absent or nonexistent object is possible, and
how a physical system can acquire representational normativity.
Brentano is a major source of the modern revival of intentionality; Husserl deepens lived directedness and mode of
presentation; analytic traditions seek naturalisation through semantics, causation, information, teleology and functional role. It
would be premature to conclude that any one framework has fully explained every form of content.
The debate over the self is not one question. Minimal first-person givenness, ownership, agency, de se thought, narrative
identity, social identity and persistence are different targets. Slogans such as “the self exists” or “the self is an illusion” remain
unclear unless the target is specified.
Gallagher’s minimal/narrative distinction, Zahavi’s pre-reflective self-awareness, Shoemaker and Perry on first-person structure,
Parfit’s reductionism, animalism, and Metzinger’s self-model each illuminate a different dimension of the self.
First-person authority is special but fallible. An avowal of experience cannot be replaced by third-person observation, yet self-
interpretation, motive, memory and causal theory remain corrigible. Parallel epistemology should respect this asymmetry.
Naturalising intentionality requires explaining not only representation but misrepresentation, normativity, learning, abstraction
and context. Biological function, causal information, inferential role and embodied coupling may be mutually complementary.
The Indian dialogue does not provide a complete conclusion to the ātman–anātman debate; that is the subject of Chapter 80.
Here Nyāya on cognition and self-awareness, Buddhist resources concerning no-self, the Vedānta witness, and Ganeri’s first-
person stance are not counterparts of modern categories but independent argumentative partners.
Mithila’s contribution is not a claim of priority but methodological precision and local evidence: Navya-Nyāya analysis of
relations, multilingual first-person usage, migration narratives, archives, genealogical records and digital corpora disclose
distinct data layers concerning self and intentionality.
The age of AI intensifies the questions of Chapter 79. Without separately measuring derived linguistic intentionality, learned
representation, agent-level goal attribution, self-model, persistent identity and phenomenal selfhood, claims that “AI
understands” or “AI has a self” can become unscientific or unclear.
The chapter’s final maxim is: “The mind is about something; experience occurs from someone’s point of view; but ‘the object’, ‘I’
and ‘the same person’ are three different questions. Clear philosophy does not collapse them.”
