समस्या
“मिथिला” शब्द एकहि समय भूगोल, ऐतिहासिक स्मृति, भाषिक क्षेत्र, सांस्कृतिक संसार, धार्मिक कल्पना, बौद्धिक परम्परा आ राजनीतिक दाबी सभकेँ संकेत करैत अछि। समस्या तखन शुरू होइत अछि जखन एहि अनेक अर्थमे सँ कोनो एक अर्थकेँ “सच्चा मिथिला” मानि बाँकी सभकेँ अप्रमाणिक ठहरा देल जाए। एहि अध्यायक मूल प्रश्न अछि: साम्राज्य, आधुनिक राष्ट्र-राज्य आ क्षेत्रीय आत्मबोधक बीच मिथिला कोना बनैत, बदलैत आ पुनःपरिभाषित होइत रहल? “क्षेत्र” की केवल नक्शापर खींचल सीमा अछि, वा भाषा, स्मृति, नदी, बाजार, विवाह, शिक्षा, प्रवासन आ संस्थागत शक्तिक सम्बन्धसँ बनैत चलैत प्रक्रिया? ऐतिहासिक Mithila केँ आधुनिक Bihar वा Nepalक वर्तमान administrative map पर सीधा आरोपित करब पद्धतिगत भूल होएत। अलग-अलग कालमे political jurisdiction, revenue district, linguistic spread, pilgrimage network, scholarly circuit आ marriage sphere एक-दोसरासँ पूर्णतः मेल नहि खाइत छल। पूर्व-औपनिवेशिक “Mithila,” “Tirhut,” “Tirabhukti,” “Videha” आ अन्य क्षेत्रीय नामसभक प्रयोग काल, स्रोत आ उद्देश्य अनुसार बदलैत रहल। एतय etymology केँ राजनीतिक सीमा मानि लेब ऐतिहासिक प्रमाणक बदला retrospective cartography बनत। औपनिवेशिक शासन region केँ नया administrative grammar देलक: district, division, survey, estate, census, linguistic map, railway route आ revenue category। मुदा colonial boundary cultural lifeकेँ पूर्णतः नियंत्रित नहि करि सकल; लोक, बाजार, विवाह, pilgrimage आ भाषा network प्रशासनिक रेखासँ पार चलैत रहल। 1912 मे Bihar and Orissa केँ Bengal सँ अलग कएल गेलाक बाद “Mithila”क regional imagination नव राजनीतिक परिस्थिति मे प्रवेश कएलक। late colonial periodमे एक दिस Darbhanga Rajक संरक्षण आ brahmanical-cultural दाबी, दोसर दिस Maithili भाषा-आधारित अधिक व्यापक regional identityक निर्माण देखाइत अछि। Maithili movementक इतिहास देखबैत अछि जे region भाषा द्वारा articulated भऽ सकैत अछि, मुदा भाषा स्वयं pre-given सीमा नहि। कौन बोली Maithili कहल जाए, censusमे कोन mother tongue लिखल जाए, school/pressमे कोन standard चले—ई सभ राजनीतिक-सामाजिक निर्णय सेहो छथि। आधुनिक India मे Mithila Bihar राज्यक भीतर अछि, मुदा सांस्कृतिक-भाषिक स्मृति Biharक administrative identityसँ पूर्णतः समाप्त नहि होइत। एक व्यक्ति एकहि समय Maithil, Bihari आ Indian हो सकैत अछि; nested belonging केँ zero-sum identity बनाब जरूरी नहि। Nepal मे Janakpur आ आसपासक Maithili-speaking world मिथिला-स्मृतिक महत्वपूर्ण केन्द्र अछि। मुदा Nepalक state formation, Tarai/Madhesh politics, citizenship, language policy आ India–Nepal relationक history भारतक north Biharसँ भिन्न अछि। cross-border cultural affinity राजनीतिक-संप्रभुता मिटा नहि दैत।
मूल प्रतिपादन
एहि अध्यायक मूल प्रतिपादन अछि: मिथिला एक “relational region” अछि—जकर ऐतिहासिक अस्तित्व language, memory, knowledge networks, kinship, markets, ecology, institutions आ political claimsक बदलैत सम्बन्धमे बनैत रहल; ओकरा एक स्थिर timeless polygon वा एक मात्र समुदायमे कैद नहि कएल जा सकैत। साम्राज्य region केँ नष्ट मात्र नहि करैत; ओ region केँ classify, survey, tax, connect आ re-scale सेहो करैत अछि। colonial administration Mithila/Tirhutक पुरान स्मृतिसभक ऊपर district/division/estateक नया grid राखलक, आ एहि gridक भीतर regional politicsक नया भाषा बनल। राष्ट्र-राज्य regionक प्रतिपक्ष होएबाक आवश्यक नहि। democratic nation बहुस्तरीय belonging स्वीकारि सकैत अछि, जँ citizenship, rights आ constitutional equality regional identityक आधार पर सीमित नहि कएल जाए। regional identityक legitimacy ancientness मात्रसँ नहि निकलैत। “हम हजारों वर्ष पुरान छी” political अधिकारक स्वतः प्रमाण नहि। legitimacy आजुक नागरिक consent, equality, administrative feasibility, cultural freedom आ distributive justice सँ सेहो जाँचल जाए। भाषा region निर्माणक शक्तिशाली माध्यम अछि, मुदा language boundary social interactionसँ porous रहैत अछि। Maithili, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sanskrit, local speech forms आ multilingual practiceक इतिहास regionकेँ बहुभाषिक बनबैत अछि, monolingual fortress नहि। Grierson आ colonial linguistic surveys Maithiliक scholarly visibility बढ़ौलनि; साथे state classification बोलिक विविधताकेँ categoryमे स्थिर सेहो कएलक। recognition आ appropriationक ई दोहरा पक्ष colonial knowledgeक mixed legacyक उदाहरण अछि। Darbhanga Raj regional public sphereक patron रहल, मुदा “Raj = Mithila” कहब गलत। zamindari power, caste hierarchy, philanthropy, education, print, nationalism आ regional advocacyक परस्पर जटिल सम्बन्ध अलग-अलग जाँचबाक चाही। late colonial Mithila identityक कम-से-कम दू प्रमुख register देखाइत अछि: धर्म/orthodoxy-केंद्रित territorial imagination आ language-centered अधिक inclusive Maithila peopleक imagination। एहि भिन्नतासँ regional identityक contingent, contested character स्पष्ट होइत अछि। cross-border Mithila region nationalismक सिद्धान्तकेँ कठिन प्रश्न दैत अछि। cultural-linguistic continuity international boundaryक आर-पार रहि सकैत अछि, मुदा political loyalty, legal citizenship आ democratic accountability respective statesक भीतर अलग संस्थागत रूप लेत। Janakpur आ Darbhanga केँ “दू capital” कहि poetic रूपक उपयोगी भऽ सकैत अछि, मुदा legal-administrative meaning नहि। cultural centre आ sovereign capitalक concept अलग राखब आवश्यक।
प्रमुख तर्क

पूर्वपक्ष

उत्तरपक्ष

भारतीय संवाद

मिथिलाक समानान्तर दृष्टि

समकालीन प्रयोग
