Mishra reads Panji as a record of social arrangements whose exclusions require examination. Dushan records, including accounts of marriages outside prescribed boundaries, complicate idealized narratives of purity. He proposes comparing manuscripts and transcriptions, training readers in Tirhuta and extending attention to women and other communities. The long discussion is a sociological research agenda as much as a book response; he cautions against excessive scientific claims and acknowledges limits to his assessment.
