Anil introduces Panji terminology, record types, genealogists and the relationship between marriage documentation and social hierarchy. He emphasizes the difficulty posed by unfamiliar scripts and the value of transliteration for readers. Crucially, he says that many pages remain unread: this is an introductory response during an unfinished reading, not a comprehensive assessment. The historical rules described in the essay should be distinguished from present-day endorsement of them.
