production Regional evidence and its limits The prehistory of the wider middle Gangetic plain is reconstructed from unevenly investigated sites, ceramics, plant and animal remains, lithic industries, and radiocarbon samples. Chirand, on the north bank of the Ganga in present Saran, is especially important for eastern Indian early farming sequences. Published radiocarbon lists placed several relevant samples broadly within the second millennium BCE, but investigators also warned about disturbed deposits and anomalous determinations. A responsible narrative presents ranges and stratigraphic cautions rather than a single spectacular date. Food production without a single origin story The archaeological record supports changing combinations of cultivation, herding, fishing, hunting, and gathering. Rice appears within a broader subsistence system rather than as proof of an instant agricultural revolution. Bone and antler industries and riverine resources at sites such as Chirand underline adaptation to wetlands and floodplains. The evidence does not justify projecting the later names Mithila, Vajji, or Anga back onto Neolithic communities. From objects to social history Pottery types and tool assemblages help establish sequence and exchange, but social hierarchy, language, and political identity require independent evidence. Even when a material horizon is widespread, it need not represent one people. The most defensible conclusion is that diverse communities in the Gangetic and Himalayan piedmont zones developed increasingly settled and productive lifeways on different timetables. 21 How archaeological deposits are made An archaeological layer is the outcome of occupation, rebuilding, refuse disposal, erosion, flooding, burrowing, cultivation, and later construction. In an active alluvial landscape, objects can be redeposited far from the activity that first produced them. A radiocarbon determination dates the sampled organic material, not automatically an entire cultural phase; the relationship between sample and layer must be demonstrated. These elementary cautions are crucial in the middle Gangetic plain, where dramatic early dates have sometimes circulated more widely than the qualifications printed with them.
