Railways, Roads and Changing Markets

Railways reorganized the economic geography of Mithila, Vajji and Anga without erasing rivers, roads, ferries or animal transport. South of the Ganga, the East Indian Railway reached major Anga towns in the early 1860s; north of the river, the Tirhut network expanded from famine-relief construction in the 1870s into a branching metre-gauge system. Stations and junctions changed market hierarchy, roads increasingly became railway feeders, and new links drew frontier trade toward railheads. At the same time, flood ecology, river crossings, gauge breaks and the continuing need for carts preserved substantial friction. This chapter reconstructs that layered transport economy and treats market integration as an uneven historical process rather than an automatic result of railway mileage. Colonial transport history in Mithila, Vajji and Anga cannot be reduced to a sequence in which railways arrived and older routes vanished. Before rail construction, the Ganga and its tributaries, ferries, seasonal roads, carts, pack animals and foot traffic already connected village production to market towns and longer-distance commerce. Railways entered this existing geography and altered the relative cost, speed and reliability of particular routes. They encouraged some towns to become junctions or collection centres, reduced the commercial advantage of certain older road and river markets, and made feeder roads more valuable. Yet much traffic still had to reach a station by cart, cross a river by ferry, or continue toward Nepal over roads and tracks. The historical question is therefore not whether rail replaced road and river, but how several transport systems were recombined into a new hierarchy of accessibility.
