Roads, railways, electricity and communications altered the social geography of Mithila, Vajji and Anga after independence by changing what distance meant. The region had always been densely settled and commercially active, but rivers, seasonal flooding, weak all-weather roads, fragmented rail gauges, limited electric supply and slow communication made movement costly and uncertain. A village might be physically close to a town yet effectively distant during the monsoon; a district might lie on a railway map yet remain poorly linked across the Ganga or Kosi; an electrified town could coexist with villages where lighting, irrigation pumping or radio communication remained intermittent. Post-1947 infrastructure history is therefore a history of reducing effective distance rather than merely adding kilometres of road, track, wire and fibre. The transformation occurred in overlapping waves. Major bridges created new north–south corridors; rural roads connected habitations to markets, schools and hospitals; gauge conversion and electrification reorganised rail mobility; household electrification turned electricity from an urban privilege into a mass utility; and telephony moved from scarce landlines to mobile and broadband networks. By the mid-2020s these systems had become interdependent. Roads carried maintenance crews and fibre; electricity powered mobile towers and data centres; phones coordinated buses, migration and emergency care; digital payments changed roadside commerce; and railway reservation became a networked service. Yet the old regional problem did not disappear. Flood damage, bridge congestion, weak maintenance, uneven feeder quality and the digital divide continued to determine whether formal connectivity became reliable everyday access.
