Différance: Deferral and Difference in Meaning
Parallel Philosophy · Volume II · Chapter 30
Research record
Derrida’s word ‘différance’ is deliberately written differently from the usual French word ‘diférie’. They sound almost identical in pronunciation; The difference shows in the writing. For this reason, the term itself exemplifies the critique of speechcentrism—the distinction that writing shows, speech can hide. ‘différance’ signifies not a static definable object, but two interconnected acts of meaning becoming: difference—one sign is different from another; Postponement—Meaning is not entirely immediately present, moving forward in relation to other cues, contexts, and time. If the word 'tree' finds meaning through many linguistic relationships such as 'house', 'forest', 'plant', 'wood', 'living', 'shadow', etc., then meaning is not an isolated essence. But this web of relationships does not mean that the word ‘tree’ can ever be ‘ocean’. Language, society, history, usage and the world form the boundaries of meaning. The basic assertion of this chapter is that différance indicates a dynamic condition of meaning production: the sign that is differs from other signs, and its meaning is not completely closed at one moment, but deferred/extended to other relations and possible iterations. Variation is the spatial aspect—signs gain value by difference from each other. Postponement is the temporal aspect—the fullness of meaning is not self-present in a single present moment; Previous experiments, current contexts and future iterations influence them. différance is not a basic element like ‘reason’; Derrida's critique will fail if he himself becomes the stable center. This indicates a centerless relational process.
Structured debate
Pūrvapakṣa
The first form of the precedent states that différance undermines the possibility of clear meaning. If meaning is constantly deferred, how to explain the fact of successful communication? The second premise is from analytic philosophy—‘variation’ and ‘deferral’ are very broad metaphors; Without precise semantic theory, he can remain philosophically ambiguous. The third premise is from science—operational definitions of scientific terms are often clear enough; The eternal suspension of meaning would not show the reality of scientific practice. The fourth premise is from history—if each text has the potential for new meaning, how can we separate the original historical meaning from the subsequent history of reception? The fifth premise is from Indian comparison—superficial similarities can suppress historical differences when combining apoh, emptiness, polytheism, or explosion with différance.
Uttarapakṣa
Answer to the first precedent—adjournment-not impossibility of communication. Language finds functional stability; The question is about absolute ultimate self-presence, not local sufficient meaning. The answer to the second precedent—différance is not a formal semantic theory, but a tool of metaphysical/textual critique. For that reason, parallel philosophy associates it with claim-specific analysis, rather than substituting for logic/evidence. Answer to the third premise—scientific operational definition is an excellent example of functional closure. may modify new search definitions; Amendability is not semantic chaos. The answer to the fourth precedent—historical meaning and reception—are separate levels. Historical meaning should be inferred from the vocabulary, period, institutions and available evidence of the original text; The history of subsequent rereadings should be recorded separately. Answer to the fifth premise—Indian principles should remain independent: apoh ≠ différance; emptiness ≠ différance; polytheism ≠ différance; Explosion ≠ différance. Common questions only to distinction, dependence, linguistic comprehension or boundaries.
Parallel conclusion
différance is a combined sign of difference and postponement in Derrida's philosophy. Meaning is formed by distinction from other signs and would not end in a moment as a fully self-present object. This position is not a manifesto of semantic impossibility or relativism. Social usage, grammar, history, institutions and contexts give sufficient functional stability. Extends the meaning of sign-impression, repeatability, temporal memory/expectation and context-change différance. Indian apocalypse, emptiness, pluralism, explosion or neo-justice makes problem-dialogue possible, not historical identity.
