New Questions in the Philosophy of Mind
Parallel Philosophy · Volume II · Chapter 75
Research record
The contemporary position of Philosophy of Mind begins with a paradox: empirical knowledge on the brain, behavior, perception, memory, sleep, anesthesia and language processing has grown phenomenally, but “what is mind?” The question didn't end. More data sometimes doesn't answer old questions, but rather fine-tunes questions. The “mind” is not an object-like uniform subject. Experience, thought, intention, feeling, memory, imagination, judgment, agency, self-awareness, bodily feeling and social understanding—these are separate aspects of mental life; It is unreasonable to assume in advance that one theory will explain all in the same way. The first reason for the new question is neuroscience. Correlations of neural activity and mental state are increasing, but correlation, mechanism, constitution, cause and explanation are not the same thing. The ability to show a brain scan would not itself determine the philosophical meaning of the experience. The basic assertion of this chapter is: the new philosophy of mind is called “What is a substance?”. It is necessary to go beyond the question to a multilevel explanatory framework—the claims of phenomenal, functional, neural, bodily, environmental, social and normative levels should be examined on different criteria. For the explanation of a mental phenomenon, at least four questions should be set aside: How much is this experience? What does it function? What mechanism/structure does it rely on? What role does it play in relation to the individual and the environment? An answer to one question is not an automatic answer to another. neural dependence provides strong evidence that human mental life is deeply connected to brain function. But dependence does not automatically prove metaphysical identity. “When X changes, Y changes” is important, but “X = Y” requires additional logic.
Structured debate
Pūrvapakṣa
Premise 1: neuroscience is progressing rapidly enough; The separate role of Philosophy of Mind will gradually disappear. When the neural mechanism is fully understood, there will be no metaphysical or phenomenological questions remaining. Premise 2: first-person report is unreliable. introspection bias, confabulation, memory error and demand characteristics because scientific theory should be based only on objective behavior and brain data. Premise 3: embodiment/4E theories are fashionable vocabulary. brain not body/environment cognition without, it's trivial; But claims like “mind extends” obscure cognitive boundaries. Premise 4: Accepting the extended-mind thesis would lead to cognitive bloat—phone, library, internet, teacher, city would all be said to be part of the mind. The useful distinction between internal mechanism and external aid will be lost. Premise 5: The language of predictive processing is very flexible; nearly every result can be fitted to the prediction/error framework. If falsification difficult, explanatory power less.
Uttarapakṣa
Answer 1: Advances in neuroscience make philosophy more precise, not eliminated. From “mechanism found” to “what explanandum?”. The question does not move. The concepts of consciousness, representation, cause, self and responsibility are presupposed in advance of the experimental design. Response 2: The fallibility of first-person reports would not have eliminated their scientific uses. The thermometer also asks for calibration; The data source may be flawed, but could be used by knowing the reliability condition. report, triangulation of behavior and physiology proper methodology. Answer 3: The trivial version of embodiment should be separated from the strong constitutive version. finds widespread evidence of the causal importance of the body; Whether the constitution of mind extends to body/environment requires case-specific argument. Answer 4: The cognitive bloat objection is useful filter for extended mind. Not only parity, but also integration, availability, trust, automaticity, reciprocal coupling, vulnerability to removal and other criteria should be imposed. This avoids the every tool = mind conclusion. Answer 5: Predictive frameworks need explicit competing predictions. model will become rhetoric if it cannot distinguish measurable patterns of surprise, perception, action or learning; valid as testable version research program.
Parallel conclusion
The most important change to the new question of Philosophy of Mind is “Where is the mind?” More than “which phenomenon is explained by what evidence at what level?” The question is becoming central. brain evidence Inevitable, but alone not enough. The explanatory roles of neural correlation, causal intervention, behaviour, phenomenology, body, environment and social context should be set aside. first-person experience is not the enemy of scientific inquiry; Check its reliability condition. subjective report should be made neither absolute authority, nor epistemic zero. Embodied, enactive and extended approaches challenge brain-centric simplification, but clear criteria are needed for strong constitutive claims. Not every tool or environment part of mind.
