The reader enters the family's reading world
Members of the family read different things: a schoolbook, Bible, recipe book, newspaper, magazine and picture book. The sequence then turns towards the act of reading this book itself. That recursive move brings the child holding the book into its subject, making literacy a shared activity with several purposes rather than only a school task.
The domestic specificity is also worth discussing. The distribution of reading material follows recognisable gendered roles, and the religious text belongs to a particular household context; neither should be taken as a universal definition of family. A translation can preserve that difference while inviting readers to describe their own homes. Preeti Thakur's Maithili version opens the encounter without needing to erase the source setting.
