Chapter purpose Create a place index for the villages, towns,
regions, tols, settlement labels, and ड्योढ़ी

references appearing in the decoded Khand 2
                                               Uptip Panji.

Coverage base Genome Mapping Volume I, Khand 2 -
                                               Entries 1-224.

Index fields Standard place form; source variants; entry
range; role in the Panji formula; reading note.

Main roles origin, marriage destination, branch
                                               location, later settlement, estate-house
                                               reference, regional anchor, or cross-reference
                                               point.

Editorial rule Do not erase source spellings. Use a standard
headword for lookup, but preserve all visible
                                               variants.

Next tool chapter Chapter 28 will create the Personal Name
                                               Index.

  Chapter overview
A Panji entry is rarely only a sequence of personal names. It is
also a map. The repeated place phrases - सरिसब सँ , पाली सँ , करमहा सँ ,
सोदरपुर सँ , खण्डबला सँ , माण्‍डर सँ , दरिहरा सँ , घुसौत सँ , and many others - tell
the reader how descent, marriage, branch settlement, scholarly
memory, and estate identity are attached to space. Chapter 27
therefore turns the decoded entries into a place index.
This index is not a gazetteer in the modern administrative sense.
It does not try to give district coordinates, postal data, or
contemporary jurisdiction unless the Panji itself points toward a
wider regional anchor such as पूर्णियाँ , कटिहार, गढ़बनैली, or ड्योढ़ी. Its
purpose is genealogical: to help the reader find where a place
appears, how it functions in the formula, and which variant
spellings must be kept visible.

The safest way to use this chapter is to begin with the standard
headword, then read the variant column, and finally consult the
entry range. The role column should never be treated as fixed for all
occurrences. A place may be an origin in one entry, a marriage
destination in another, and a later branch settlement in a third.

  Editorial principles for place indexing
 • Index the source first, not the modern map. The source form remains
    the primary evidence.
 • Do not collapse variants silently. For example, घोसौत, घुसौत, धोसोत, and
धोसौत must remain visible as variants even when the index gives
    one standard headword.
 • Treat -पुर, -पुरा, -पु, -टोल, -पाहीटोल, -ड्योढ़ी, and -गढ़ as meaningful place
    elements, not decorative suffixes.
 • When a place follows सँ , read it as a relational marker: the relation
comes from, through, or toward that place according to the
    surrounding formula.
 • When a place appears in a chapter heading or ग्रामारम्भ line, treat it as
a branch opener unless the entry context says otherwise.
 • When a place is dotted, damaged, or half-visible, do not reconstruct a
   clean headword without a note.
 • A repeated place does not mean repeated information. Repetition is
often the mechanism by which branches are cross-linked.

How to use this place index
To trace a family line, first identify the running entry number,
then copy the exact place phrase attached to the relation. If the same
standard place appears under several spellings, check the variant-
control table before assuming that two lines refer to different places.
If the place appears in a compound such as गंगोली खौखा-पूर्णियाँ or
धनौलिया ड्योढ़ी, create cross-references under every meaningful
element, but keep the compound form intact in the main note.
The place index should be read together with the abbreviation
and number-key. A place phrase following उ.टी. or शा. may belong to
a source locator, a marriage destination, or a branch continuation.

The entry grammar must decide the role. The index only helps the
reader find the place and compare its appearances.

  Closing note
The Place Index shows that Khand 2 is a social geography as
much as a genealogy. A name becomes readable only when the
village, route, or estate-house phrase beside it is preserved. The
same place may return many times, but each return may carry a
different function: origin, marriage, branch, status, or memory.
Chapter 28 will apply the same discipline to personal names. It
will separate Devanagari name forms, variants, father-son links
where identifiable, village associations, and title-bearing figures.

Source structure and verification apparatus

Editorial source apparatus. This apparatus is descriptive, not interpretive. It records the source-controlled structure used to verify that this page corresponds to formal Chapter 27 of Decoding the Panji of Mithila — Volume III. The chapter text above is preserved from PDF pp. 288-303; formal Chapter 27 in the commit-pinned authoritative source. It is not merged with a neighboring chapter, appendix, annexure, or independent front/back-matter unit. The internal headings below come from the repository’s source-heading inventory and are retained as navigational and audit evidence; showing them here does not turn those headings into separate publications or add claims that are absent from the source.

Internal source headings

No subordinate heading was separately encoded in the repository source-heading inventory for this chapter.

Boundary verification. In the formal sequence this chapter follows Volume III Chapter 26, “Abbreviation and Number-Key Index Link Box Part Part IV - Tools for the Reader” and precedes Volume III Chapter 28, “Personal Name Index Index Link Box Part Part IV - Tools for the Reader”. The chapter extractor begins at the verified formal Chapter 27 marker and stops at the next verified formal chapter marker; for a final chapter it stops before recognized book-level back matter. The concordance above is generated only from distinct terms already present in this chapter’s preserved source text. It is provided for discovery, comparison, and audit, not as an automated judgment about persons, lineages, status, kinship, marriage eligibility, or historical truth.
