Chapter overview
The Panji is organized around names, but a name in the Panji is
never an isolated label. It becomes meaningful only when read with
its father or son marker, its daughter-line marker, its village
association, its title, and its cross-reference number. Chapter 28
therefore provides a personal-name index designed for
reconstruction, not for casual alphabetical listing.
This index does not pretend that every repeated name is one
person. Names such as जीवनाथ, दामोदर, हरिनाथ, यदुनाथ, गंगानाथ, रामकृ ष्ण,
कमलानाथ, बद्रीनाथ, and शक्तिनाथ recur across many places. The same
name may belong to separate lines unless the entry provides a
secure relational bridge. The safest index note is therefore not “same
person,” but “compare the father, son, place, and number.”

Names with titles are especially important. A person may appear
as वैयाकरण, नैयायिक, मीमांसक, म.म.उ., बाबू, ठाकु र, सिंह, राजा, महाराज, डॉ., प्रो.,
आई.ए.एस., or आई.पी.एस. Those titles are not ornamental. They help
identify the social role of the branch and must be indexed together
with the name without replacing the underlying personal name.
Editorial principles for personal-name indexing
• Index the Devanagari name first; use Roman transliteration only as a
private working aid, not as the source form.
• Treat सुत, सुता, प्र., अपरा, नी., and title words as evidence for
disambiguation.
• Do not merge two identical names unless the surrounding father,
descendant, place, or entry-number pattern supports it.
• When a name is followed by dotted gaps, record the gap instead of
supplying a missing father or son.
• When a name carries a title, index the name here and cross-
reference it in Chapter 29.
• When a name appears inside a royal or ड्योढ़ी cluster, preserve both
the personal name and the estate-house context.
• When the source gives a nickname after प्र., keep the full phrase: for
example, फू च्ची प्र., बौकू प्र., बंगाली प्र., or गोविन्द जी.
• Modern educational and professional initials are part of the source
memory and should be retained in the note, not expanded by
guesswork.
