Criticism as a public activity
The contents connect literary theory with applied questions about fiction, readership, children's storytelling, technology and language. The sampled discussion of women's education and collective participation makes the social horizon explicit. Literature here belongs to a field of public action; criticism does more than classify devices or pronounce on individual excellence.
That breadth is also the collection's central tension. Arguments about social participation can illuminate the conditions in which writing becomes possible, but they do not by themselves demonstrate how a particular narrative works. The strongest way to use this collection is to move between its theoretical propositions and the textual examples offered in its applied studies. Ask whether a critical category produces a more precise reading, or merely supplies another name for an already preferred position.
A QUESTION TO CARRY BACK
How does an applied reading test, revise or complicate the theory that precedes it?
